Recycling antique windows

On many of our houses we have used antique stained glass windows to add character and beauty. We have found the windows at places like Antiques & Oddities in Bingen, WA or Rejuvenation in Portland, Oregon. Usually when you find an antique stained glass window it will have been removed from it's casing and will possibly have just wood surrounding the glass art. usually with multiple layers of paint and sometimes in very rough condition. Here is how we have used these windows in our projects step by step.

Determine the rough opening size you want to put the window in.
Locate an antique window which is smaller than your opening size to allow for the casing that needs to be built around the window.
Clean up the antique window by scraping loose paint, sanding, removing nails, screws and filling holes or cracks in the wood.
Sometimes there will be old paint on some of the lead and glass. You can carefully remove the paint with a razor blade.
When the wood surrounding the glass is sanded enough to your satisfaction you can paint the wood. I usually tape off the glass and lead surrounding it.
You will need to build a casing to set the glass panel in. First determine if you have 2x4 or 2x6 construction
We build a 4 sided casing the correct size to accomodate the window surrounded by the wood.
Next we put wood stops in to hold the window in place. This will also be 4 pieces top, bottom, and 2 sides. We determine where these go by how thick the glass in frame is and where we want the window to set in the casing.
After you have the casing nailed together and the first set of 4 stops nailed in place you can lay the glass in the surrounding frame in the casing and the stops will hold it. If you prefer you may put primer or a first coat of paint on prior to installing the glass in the casing.
After you place the glass in frame into the casing you will need 4 more stops to lock it in place. We make these from wood and place them on top of the window-top, bottom, 2 sides. We use a pin nailer to fasten them in.
When all stops are in place you can use caulking to seal the stops to the wood surrounding the glass and also the stops to the casing you've built. You can also fill any small holes as necessary. Next paint the casing and stops with a final coat.
You now have a complete recycled art window in a casing ready to install in your rough opening.

We have built these windows for both exterior and interior use. Our latest one had been an opening window and had the original hardware. We were able to reuse the hardware and build a casing with weatherstripping so we now have an awning style operable window. Very sweet!

Below is one of our windows installed and trimmed out.

Below is a large antique stained glass window we used in an interior application with clear fir trim. This was used in a stairwell to let in additional light.

Below is the latest window we've recycled. It is a hinged operable window with a vintage latch/lock. We were missing the pin to lock in place and found a reproduction replacement at Rejuvenation for $6.00.
