PORTLAND IS GREEN

Portland, Oregon was recently chosen as one of 10 greenest cities in the U.S. This is admirable for a city considering the continuous  trash, traffic, and pollution that a city this size generates.

Straddling the banks of the Willamette River, Portland has long made sustainable living a priority. More than 30 years ago, when many cities were building freeways, Portland tore down a six-lane expressway to make room for a waterfront park. Since then the city has set an urban growth boundary to protect 25 million acres of forest and farmland, erected more than 50 public buildings that meet tough standards set by the United States Green Building Council and started a solid-waste program that recycles more than half of the city's trash.

Portland, Oregon is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the U.S. Portland's public transportation systems boast a high rate of ridership. Add in one of the nation's largest city parks- Forest Park has 74 miles of running, biking and hiking trails - and the choice of  Portland  as one of the nation's 10 greenest cities makes sense.

THE HOUSE IS GOING UP

The house we are building in East Stonegate in Hood River is starting to take shape. The second floor truss system is arriving today. The garage slab is in, the first floor is mostly sheathed.  We installed a large glue lam beam in the garage Friday that supports part of the roof system and a second floor wall.  We still have two logs to put up and 3 beams that will create the covered back porch.   We are not new to the construction process. This is the 7th new construction project we have built. Typically we do everything except the plumbing, electrical, and heating systems, however this time we will be doing these ourselves also. We found out about Vinje & Sons Do It Yourself Heating in Portland.  This will save us on the cost of our gas furnace and ducting. We enjoy the framing stage of the building process as it instantly rewarding as each wall goes up.  We know that as it is nearly Oct. now we are in a race against time to get the roof on before the weather turns. Our roof system is scheduled to arrive around the middle of Oct. We have a busy 3 weeks ahead.

FIRE IN THE GORGE

A fire started this morning-Sept 20, 2007 near Underwood, WA. It began west of the old Broughton Lumber Site(which has been a hot topic in the gorge lately as SDS Lumber hopes to build a resort there). It is west of White Salmon near Hwy 14, a spark from a passing train is believed to have caused the fire.  Where I live on the westside of Hood River is straight across the Columbia from where the fire began. It was an interesting day watching the helicopters, and fire planes work on trying to contain this fire. The winds have been working against the crews with much gusting west winds. I took these pictures around 2:30 this afternoon. I heard on the Portland news that 6 homes had burned to the ground, and many people were being evacuated.
